After a couple of really slow news days there's actually quite a few stories worth covering from today's Collegian. So let's start with the one that's probably going to create the most controversy over the next few weeks - football tickets. Has the Facebook group against these new policies been created yet?
So later today expect to get an e-mail from the athletic department explaining how the ticket process for next year's football games will work. Basically it goes like this: if you want to have the opportunity to purchase tickets you will need to pre-register between May 27-May 30. Then tickets will be made available on different days in June depending on your class standing at the end of the Fall '08 semester. So seniors can purchase on June 16, juniors June 17, sophomores June 18, freshman June 19 and grad students June 20.
There will be 21,000 students tickets available to purchase (the same number as last year) but this doesn't mean the seniors and juniors will buy up all the tickets on the first two days since the amount of tickets made available to each class will depend on the percentage of students that class makes up. As The Collegian says, "For example, if the senior class at Penn State makes up 26 percent of the student population at University Park, 26 percent of the 21,000 student tickets will be allocated for the day seniors buy tickets."
But what is sure to anger most students at University Park is that students at all the branch campuses will have the same chance of getting tickets. In The Collegian article, Greg Myford, associate athletic director of marketing and communication says that students at branch campuses make up 13% of the total student ticket sales, so is it really worth getting that worked up about? Well, I'm sure there will be multiple letters-to-the-editor in the next few Collegians.
But luckily for people who intend of making thousands of dollars from selling your tickets, it looks like the tickets won't be linked to your ID card ... yet. But look for that change to happen in 2009. So you'll probably be able to make some extra dough this year, although there's no Notre Dame game this year, so ...
But hey, I'm sure you can get a pretty penny for the Coastal Carolina or Temple games!
