The Penn State Alumni Association has financed the production of 3,000 sets of trading cards featuring several members of the Penn State faculty.
A committee chose the 10 faculty members for 2008 based on awards received, major discoveries and other criteria.
University president Graham Spanier came up with idea for the cards several years ago and the Alumni Association produced the first set in 2007. University Publications Editor and Director Jeff Hermann and staff designed the cards.
The cards will be-and have been-given out at the president's tailgate held before each home football game.
The cards, like cards belonging to various sports, feature a picture of the faculty member and several stats about that particular professor. For example, Prof Catherine Ross' card says she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2003.
A spokesmen for the Alumni Association says it is a great way to highlight some of the outstanding faculty that reside at the university.
The cards have been featured in USA Today and by the Associated Press.

Stumble It

I was all over this story weeks ago. The irony is that that idea of faculty trading cards originated in a couple of satires of the corporate university.
So, as I've long said, Spanier is a joke.
