If you've been on the campus in the past week, you've probably heard about the very bizarre, and rather alarming series of events related to one member of Princeton's conservative Anscombe society. First, Francisco Nava '09 reported that several threatening emails had been sent to him and other members of the society, telling him to shut up and making death threats.
That was bad enough; but a few days later he reported that he had been attacked by two masked assailants, who told him to "shut the f*** up" just like in the email. Things looked grim. However, hold onto your hats, ladies and gentlemen; it gets more twisted from there.
The Daily Prince has now reported that Nava confessed to making the whole thing up. He sent the emails to himself and others, and was apparently even willing to hit himself on the head hard enough to get a concussion.
Suspicions were first raised about the validity of his reports when it was discovered that Nava had pulled a similar stunt when in high school, scrawling the message "Die ****s" on his own door. Nava was duly punished and wrote a letter to the Dean of Admissions at Princeton, explaining his actions as coming out of the depression following the death of his father. Princeton found the argument satisfying. But now, sadly, it looks like the troubling behavior has been repeated.
Here's hoping Nava is given support and counseling. This baffling event has, at the very least, not sullied the name of Princeton's liberals; that's always good news.
