As the Proposition 8 debacle displays, it can be hard for homosexuals to gain equal rights. That dilemma is especially hard if you’re a gay penguin.
 

No, that’s not a metaphor akin to being a “Bear” in the gay culture. There have actually been several gay penguin couples identified in zoos around the world. And some of those gay couples want the same rights and benefits of being a straight penguin, including parenthood.
 

China Daily reports that a couple of gay penguins have attempted to steal eggs from straight birds in order to become proud papas. The little tricksters placed stones at the feet of the real parents before taking the eggs in a sneaky effort to get away with the crime. Now the gay birds must be housed separately to keep the peace.

A keeper at Polar Land in Harbin, northeast China explained that the gay couple had the natural urge to become fathers, despite their sexuality.

"One of the responsibilities of being a male adult is looking after the eggs. Despite this being a biological impossibility for this couple, the natural desire is still there," a keeper told the Austrian Times newspaper.

"It's not discrimination. We have to fence them separately, otherwise the whole group will be disturbed during hatching time," he added.

I know they are cold weather birds, but maybe these penguins should head south to Florida. A Miami-Dade judge just ruled that a state law banning homosexuals from adopting children is unconstitutional. C’mon penguins, fight for your rights!
