Score one for muckraking journalism – or not.
According to the illustrious IvyGate, the Daily Princetonian, Princeton’s student-run, propaganda-riddled news rag, is being audited by the New Jersey Department of Labor.
There’s an important caveat to their allegations, however: the largely self-congratulatory post written by Robyn Schneider relies almost exclusively on blind faith – faith that IvyGate has in its possession an incriminating e-mail written by Princeton’s “tax guy.”
That’s not to say the story is a complete fabrication. Far from it, IvyGate has a commendable track record when it comes to shining light upon corruption in the Ivy League, but the world needs evidence, not informed supposition.
Granted, a “no comment” from a school official on a sensitive matter is generally an admission of guilt, a self-incriminating “you got me” in PR speak. But, it’s not enough, and until there is something more concrete, this is all conjecture based on a plausible lead.
For now, take it with a grain of salt, but in a week or two, don’t be surprised to see a follow-up from IvyGate with a Stephen Colbert “I Called It” gif featured prominently above the fold.
