You know who I really hate? Those f---ing blue people.
Alright, so the University isn't allowed to admit people based on race or gender anymore because of Prop 2. But that doesn't mean they can't give the ones that are coming here money. That's right, the Alumni Association is going to start "giving out scholarships based on race and gender." And now it seems we're at the point now where they don't even feel obligated to throw in "and also maybe with consideration to academic performance."
I don't get political very often, but this issue has stumped me since my junior year of high school. I scored particularly well on the PSAT. My friend also scored well, albeit less well than I did. My friend was black and female. Guess which one of us got the National PSAT Scholarship of Freedom cash prize while the other got nothing? I know things like these are supposed to make up for disadvantages minorities might have, but this girl lived in the same upper middle-class subdivision I did. There's a disconnect in fairness here.
If I was a minority, I would be insulted by a scholarship that insinuates, "Hey you're black (or latino, asian, a woman) and pretty smart? Wow that's quite a feat, here's some money!" I mean I'd still take the cash, but I'd be scowling when I did so.
I know this is an exceedingly complex issue, but that's just my two cents. I'm not racist or sexist or any other bullshit like that, I just will always fail to see the logic behind affirmative action whether it's used for admissions or scholarships. Goooo politics!
