Assuming that you actually go to your classes, you may have seen a few people out and around campus riding these strange devices. Part skateboard, part snowboard, these unique vehicles are known as Caster boards (or Wave boards).
The most eye-catching aspect of these boards is their method of propulsion. Instead of pushing against the ground, the rider swivels his or her hips and legs, producing a transverse wave motion. As long as they don’t encounter any particularly steep hills, riders with good balance never have to step off their boards.
After one boarder kindly allowed the OTR staff to borrow his board, it seems safe to say that these won’t catch on at Purdue. They are easiest to ride on smooth surfaces and downhill inclines, both of which Purdue is severely lacking. Crowds, rough sidewalks, and bumpy pavement make for a difficult and tiring ride. Still, they are a lot of fun, so don’t expect them to disappear completely any time soon.
