Bikers Need to Obey Laws, Too
"Dude, my Huffy gets better mileage than your Hummer."

The Exponent is having a bit of a print-media flame war, and OTR just can't wait to weigh in.

A few weeks ago, the Exponent's editorial board let off a little steam about bikers who weave through pedestrians on campus. Cyclists soon leapt at their throats, with first one angry biker writing in to blame the pedestrians, then another to specifically blame pedestrians listening to iPods.

What's missing, though, is the perspective of drivers!

For years bikers have bitched and moaned about ‘sharing the road.’ But sometimes the road is annoying, with stop signs, one lane roads, and other laws to ignore. So bikers are found weaving from street to sidewalk, cursing cars that move too fast or pedestrians who don’t move fast enough.

Well, bikers, you don’t get to have your cake and eat it, too. If you want to ride on our roads, don’t get in us drivers' way. We're going to mow down the next moron pedaling at 15 MPH in a 35 zone just because a sign says ‘Share the Road.’

We don’t mind sharing the road, but if you want to ride on the road follow the traffic laws. This includes, but is not limited to, observing one way streets, stop signs, speed limits, and staying on the road. You don’t see us tearing down the University St. sidewalk in our Ford Focus do you? So learn the laws or pay the price.

Otherwise there's going to be an angry Exponent editorial coming your way.
