Myths and Legends: The Campus Tunnels

Myths and Legends: The Campus Tunnels
By now, you’ve probably heard a few rumors regarding a network of tunnels that supposedly exists beneath the streets of Purdue. These mythical tunnels are said to connect every building on campus, providing a warm, dry walkway between classes during the winter. The thing is, according to the rumors, Purdue shut down these tunnels years ago for a variety of reasons, the most popular being a girl was raped down there.

It’s time to put these rumors to rest. The following has been confirmed by a Purdue staff member who would like to remain anonymous:

Yes, there is a network of tunnels connecting most building underneath campus. The thing is, they are not, and have never been pedestrian tunnels. They are about 6 feet wide by 6 feet tall and are taken up mostly by steam pipes, electrical cables, and fiber-optic cables. Also, back in the late 80s and early 90s, the utilities department installed motion detectors tied directly to the police department, so you may want to think twice before going snooping.
