Students Incapable of Cleaning Up After Themselves, Lack Basic Life Skills

Students Incapable of Cleaning Up After Themselves, Lack Basic Life Skills
The Exponent reported today on a new service available to Purdue Students.  Simply named 'Dorm Mom,' the service is exactly like it sounds:  You pay an older woman $320 per semester to come and clean your dorm room.  Other services include water delivery, grocery shopping, and laundry.

So who exactly is this service for?  Well, if Mommy cleaned your room and did all of your chores all through high school, and Daddy foots the bill for everything you do now in college (or vice versa), then this service is for you.  Relieve yourself of responsibility and give Dorm Mom a call.

I do not think it's a matter of not having the capability to do this things yourself. Most people are very busy in college, grad students doing research; students with a full class load and a job; students with children; or simply those that are not into this kind of things. This service is no different than calling a Pizza delivery man. Why don't everyone make their own pizza instead? It's a question of convenience not incapability. Posted 12/28/2007 11:51 AMReply

Still, college is a place where you should learn how to manage your time and how to take care of yourself and your stuff. Busy with homework? Put laundry in the washer, and work until it's done. Move to dryer, keep working. Take it out, fold it, and back to the homework. Doesn't take THAT long, really.

Yes, it's a matter of convenience, but it seems unnecessary to me. When you live in a dorm, you're already not worrying about cooking, dishes, or cleaning a bathroom or kitchen or any room other than your room (and sometimes it's just your 'side' of the room). Seriously-- is it so hard to do laundry and picking up your stuff? Maybe vacuuming or dusting every few weeks if you really care that much?

Besides- most people who need to have a job probably are taking that job because they need money, so I doubt they have plenty of extra to spend on Dorm Mom.

It's just laziness that creates demand for this product, in my mind, and I'm even a messy person by nature. College is where you learn to manage your time and do things for yourself, in my mind. Dorms take care of more of that stuff for you, and help you transition into doing about everything in an apartment. It prepares you for life, when most people won't have Mommy and Daddy's credit card- or their own- for endless spending.
