When will school faculty learn? They are faculty not students.
The Hurriqueen is the advice columnist extraordinaire for The Miami Hurricane, University of Miami’s student newspaper, and the most recent column features the issue of a partying professor on the loose.
The question:
Dear Hurriqueen,
This year has been very interesting on the party circuit. There has been a young UM professor partying with plenty of students, some underage, many of which he/she could end up teaching. Is this crossing any lines? Should a teacher be hanging out with students?
~Uncomfortable Student
It would seem that the answer is simple: Yes, there is a line crossed. But for the Hurriqueen, apparently there are no easy answers. She gets into all the legal shmegal stuff about how sexual relationships of any sort are prohibited between someone in a position of authority and a student. But that doesn’t really seem to be the case at hand..
She eventually gets around to stating that while neither the Faculty Manual nor the Student Handbook have specific policies that prohibit professors from socializing with or near students at off-campus and non-university events, it’s obvious that the professor can’t be breaking the law (duh). That boils down to no providing the underage with alcohol or eliciting sexual favors.
But aside from that, the Hurriqueen says:
Otherwise, if the professor means no harm, let it be. They can’t spend their entire careers avoiding social settings because students might be present. Furthermore, it’s Miami. Everyone is entitled to the nightlife.
Unfortunately, when it comes to collegiate life, that’s just not true. In August, a college president had to resign over partying a little too publicly. Robert Paxton, president of Iowa Central Community College, stepped down after a picture surfaced of him pouring beer down a young girl’s throat. And that wasn’t even a student on his campus (that we know of.)
So professors, if you want to get your party on scandal-free, you might want to keep the entertainment student-free.
