Upon entering college, there is a lot of pressure to know exactly what you want to study. I know I felt that way and therefore picked something that seemed interesting to me at the time. Needless to say, I have since changed my major and while I am content with my decision at this time, I am now in the process of figuring out what I want to do with my life. It turns out that I am not alone. So many people change their majors during their college career. And believe it or not, a lot of people often go into a field that is unrelated to their college majors. As an example, I have compiled a list of celebrities – actors mostly – and their college majors. Hopefully this list will put your mind at ease about trying to figure your life out.

Eva Longoria studied kinesiology at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Kinesiology is the study of body movement. She wanted to be a physical therapist before she became a desperate housewife on Wisteria Lane.

Brad Pitt studied journalism at the University of Missouri. I cannot picture Brad Pitt being anything other than, well, Brad Pitt.

Michael Jordan studied geography at the University of North Carolina. Geography? Do schools even offer that as a major anymore? Unless he wanted to go into teaching, I don’t know what he was planning to do with a geography major. It’s probably a good thing that he became a huge basketball star.

Matt Damon and Tommy Lee Jones studied English at Harvard University. I had no idea they were so smart.

Natalie Portman studied psychology at Harvard University. She graduated in 2003. Though I doubt her bright career will come to an end any time soon, at least she has something to fall back on should she ever decide to quit acting.

P. Diddy studied business at Howard University. His education is probably what helped him become such a successful business mogul. He is a rapper, actor, producer and clothing designer, among other things.

Will Ferrell studied sports broadcasting at the University of Southern California. He played anchorman Ron Burgundy in the movies but who knew that Will Ferrell wanted to be a real anchorman?

Gwyneth Paltrow studied art history at the University of California-Santa Barbara. With her dad as a noted film director/producer and her mom as an award-winning actress, it seemed she could not escape her family tradition of acting and performing.

Mira Sorvino, from her biography: Attended "Harvard, majoring in Chinese, graduating magna cum laude in 1989, largely on the strength of her thesis, a Hoopes Prize-winning thesis on racial conflict in China, written and researched during the year spent in Beijing, which helped her fluency in Mandarin Chinese."

Let’s see, I have a Masters degree in Geography and I work as a coastal hazards expert. Maybe the individual writing the column is just ignorant as to what you can do as a geographer. Have you ever heard of GIS? It’s not just states and capitals!!!!

Wow, trashing geography? I'm just remembering the poor students who came into World Geography 101 expecting to breeze through it, before figuring out in the first week that they were expected to learn something.

I majored in geography and now I'm a .NET programmer. I learned .NET programming at ESRI building web applications. Next time you use Google Maps, remember that it's geographers and cartographers who put that together.

Well, I'm glad to see that a couple of people beat me to bashing your ignorant comment about geography. Talk the the folks at UPS, FedEx, etc. about all of their GIS and math usage. And if you need something simpler, try Mapquest.

I see you geography majors are offended but you guys need to understand that this list was not about career exploration. I didn't even say anything about geography! I simply stated that I didn't know what Michael Jordan was planning to do with his major, and was just surprised that it was even his major since he did become a huge basketball star. So don't take such a light-hearted post so seriously. Thanks =)

I'm a graduate student in a geography department and it is a well known fact that Michael Jordan was a geography major.
Many schools still offer geography. Almost all public schools do. It's actually a very diverse, active field.
Geography majors go on to do all kinds of things - work for the government, teach, work in business and marketing (geographers are good at determining locations for production and retail), urban planning, journalism, international relations, intelligence, make maps. Google hires lots of geographers for Google Maps and Google Earth.
