Lange will be the guest speaker for Sarah Lawrence grads and Mulkasey will grace Boston College Law School grads with his commencement speech.

Seems like lately it’s become a competition to get the most glamorous commencement speaker when really grads just want to pick up their diplomas and head for the door. Graduation ceremonies are an all-day affair and with celebratory hang-overs, the only thing on a student’s mind is the mad dash towards the finish line.

Honestly, I had never given any thought to who I would want to speak at my graduation and I'll be sitting at my own commencement ceremony in a year! I'm sure it must be an honor to have such prestigious people speak at graduation but is really that big of a deal?

Lisa Ling, host of National Geographic's hit-show Explorer, was this year's speaker at my alma mater and I have yet to hear anyone bragging about her speaking at graduation. I'm sure she delivered an incredibly insightful speech but between exhaustion from Senior Week, tears and the long ceremony, the seniors were probably just ready to go home.

I graduated from Quinnipiac and saw Lisa Ling, who has had quite an interesting life and she spoke beautifully, but did anyone care? Ling didn't even graduate from college and her speech was not inspiring whatsoever. I start a job tomorrow and was looking for someone to provide a bit more wisdom and not just a recitation of an autobiography.

jessica lange was not just at sarah lawrence because she is a celebrity; her daughter went there and for her it was a meaningful day. apart from that, her speech was beautiful, inspiring, and really had nothing to do with her being famous. she is a hugely intelligent and wise woman and i really felt that her speech was special and that i was lucky to be there. i wasnt expecting that at all since graduations are usually boring but it just goes to show that you should never judge a book by its cover...
