The gay community has been making strides lately as they have earned the right to marry in both California and Massachusetts and are now being recognized in New York. Contrary to popular belief, it seems that same-sex marriages are not as taboo as we originally thought them to be.
A Quinnipiac poll shows that although most people in the US are against gay marriage, they do not want laws banning same-sex marriages. Here are the findings of Quinnipiac's poll:
• American voters oppose same-sex marriage 55 - 36 percent, but they don't want government to get involved in banning the practice, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.
• Democrats support same-sex marriage by a narrow 47 - 43 percent margin, while Republicans oppose it 80 - 14 percent and independent voters oppose it 49 - 43 percent.
• Women oppose same-sex marriage 51 - 40 percent and men oppose it 61 - 31 percent.
It's obvious that the gay community still has a long way to come and many battles left to fight but this is certainly a step in the right direction. Every great change in the US has required a fight. Just as the African Americans fought for civil rights, the gay community has to fight for their right to marry and enjoy the benefits of marital bliss.
With two states actively supporting their right to marry, many others will eventually follow their lead.
