After the not-so-shocking report that Amy Winehouse has been recently admitted to a hospital once again, I’m left to wonder – is she really in such bad shape or is the media to blame for trying to inflate the situation?
Amy Winehouse begun to top US music charts and has continued to gain momentum in the US with hits like the ironically titled, “Rehab” and “Wake Up Alone.” Winehouse has taken home a whopping five Grammys in the past year and has traveled the world showcasing her talent from Paris Fashion Week to the Moscow Art Center. At 24, Winehouse has an estimated 10 million euro fortune and has accomplished more than some artists could ever dream of and yet she is constantly being criticized.
According to her website, Winehouse is scheduled to perform at Heineken’s annual Dublin-based Oxegen Festival but with her recent hospitalization, there’s talk of her being a no-show at the festival. Winehouse has been reported of having severe drug addictions, her husband is currently incarcerated for assault and perverting the court justice and every day the tabloids fill their pages with the star's latest mishaps.
Some of the world's greatest artists and musicians have suffered the troubling effects of drug and alcohol addiction which has ultimately served as a creative outlet, rather than a hinderance. Jackson Pollock battled alcoholism his entire life but his struggle with his life-ending vice served as the inspiration of some of his best work.
As admirers of her work, we should all give Winehouse a break. Obviously her addictions have aided her in creating wildly infectious music (given the success of "Rehab"), so please let the poor girl breathe - she's not doing so badly for herself.
