Hairy and Heavy: The New Male Model

Hairy and Heavy: The New Male Model
Our main man. One of the show's other models. Another rail-thin feminine model of Westwood's. Vivienne Westwood The Vivienne Westwood wedding dress in Sex and The City

By the looks of the men coming down the runway, a fratty beer gut might be just what you need to launch a successful modeling career.

They say fashion is a fluctuating thing. In the past decade alone, we have progressed from the Spice Girl-induced revival of the platform shoe to the retro sophistication of the ultimate classic pieces (i.e. –anything in the J.Crew catalogue). But one thing has remained a constant throughout the past decade and that’s the constant upkeep of one’s self.

This demand to be thin, in shape and young has resonated into even our daily lives pushing college girls to use anti-aging creams and college boys to spend countless hours at the gym working on the perfect physique.

As I sipped my morning coffee and skimmed NY Mag’s fashion page, I almost spit out my coffee in shock of what I saw. Pictured above is one of Spring season’s Vivienne Westwood models. Although, he is undoubtedly attractive (and dare I say - my type?), he’s looking a little heavy, a little seasoned and a little hairy for a model.

I continued to scour through the page to see if this was an upcoming trend I was blissfully unaware of but our man stood beside himself. The rest of Westwood’s menswear models were all painfully thin, clean shaven (for the most part) and even a little feminine. So why the curveball, Westwood?

Vivienne Westwood has always been known for her over-the-top designs and has been known to shock the masses. Her extravagance has gained popularity and her designs seem to be popping up all around us starting with her designs for Gwen Stefani’s “What You Waiting For” music video to her Carrie Bradshaw’s elaborately elegant wedding dress in Sex and the City. It’s obvious that her newly found popularity has earned her the right to take a few creative risks and maybe this model is one of them.

Is average the new black? It's obvious that we, as young college students, let the media dictate what we should look like so hopefully Westwood has started a new craze that we can all happily and very willingly follow!

Jean Paul Gaultier used a plus-size model for one of the Spring 2007 looks, and certainly that has not caught on with the fashion elite, as witnessed by the recent CFDA forum on the model's appearances and health in the fashion industry. He showed two looks, and I think she chose him as he physically represents the identical aesthetic of what she was doing in the collection. I agree with you that Westwood is eccentric and often, esoteric, and she can choose whomever she pleases to model her garments.
