Studying abroad. Who doesn’t want to do it at least once? The thing is it’s kind of pricey and not many college students have the money to pay for the trip. I know I’m one of them. Still, this doesn’t seem to deter students from packing their bags and going overseas. However, once they get there they are faced with the sting of the declining U.S. dollar.

US News and World Report details that “The dollar recently made record lows against the euro, while hitting its lowest level against the Japanese yen since 2005.” My roommate (who just got back from Paris) even told me about how expensive food and other activities were during her trip.   

How to make the most of your buck:

1. Consider Other Traveling Alternatives

Yes, I know Europe is a hot spot as far as overseas travel is concerned, but it is also one of the very expensive. Look into Africa, South America, and Asia where your currency will stretch farther.

2. Select the Best Program for You

Different programs offer certain perks such as paying for meals and festive outings. Be sure to know what expenses you will be responsible for when choosing a program.

3. Check with Your Financial Aid Office

Make sure to find out if all or at least some of your financial aid will transfer to pay for program fees and tuition.  

4. Choose Short-term Over Long-Term

The shorter your trip, the less expensive your fees will be. You will have more money left over to spend on things you want to bring back with you to cement your wonderful memories.
