Five Summer Reads for 2008

Five Summer Reads for 2008

Summer reading can be a dirty suggestion for alcohol soaked college students, but we have faith that your eyes won't glaze over with stupidity. Here are five books to keep your brain from leaking out of your ears this summer.

Yes, I am a fan of reading books, and furthermore, I am a fan of reading them in favorable weather. Though it is possible to survive the entire summer without reading a book, here are some suggestions -- just in case you plan on reading a bit more than PerezHilton.com every day.

1. Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of An Unlikely Stripper
By: Diablo Cody

This memoir written by Diablo Cody, the screenwriter for Juno, chronicles her life on the pole, and the strange events that occur when you shake your naughty parts for cash.

2. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
By: Junot Diaz

I don't want to give anything away, but this book is so engaging, you'll probably finish it in a week.

3. Unaccustomed Earth
By: Jhumpa Lahiri

For those who got a chance to read Lahiri's well-known novel The Namesake, this book should be an interesting follow-up. For those who haven't read this author before, try The Namesake, and then move on Unaccustomed Earth. Also, check out the feature film adaptation of The Namesake, it's weird seeing "Kumar" in a dramatic role.

4. A Wolf At The Table
By: Augusten Burroughs

This book should be an amazing read! Burroughs' writing style is amazing, and you never have to "push" through the text, you're hanging on every word.

5. Snuff
By: Chuck Palahniuk

Sick, twisted, and eye-opening, can be used to describe novels written by Chuck P. This author has a cult following, and he is on the "Snuff Tour," so who knows you could get your book signed at a book store near you.
