Eateries on Easton: Sahara Cafe
By Valencia Chang (Chief Contributor) Tags: food, sahara, mediterranean, hummus

Formerly a hookah bar, Sahara Cafe was remodeled and revamped three years ago into one of the nicest restaurants on Easton Ave. It distinguishes itself with a varied Mediterranean menu, relaxing ambiance, and a range of affordability to make it a versatile destination for a casual bite or a romantic dinner .
The interior is decorated by rich red and gold drapes over the windows, and wall murals of the Mediterranean coast and temple ruins. Overhead, two distinct hot air balloon shaped chandeliers draw many eyes, completing the sophisticated look of Sahara Cafe. Despite its proximity to the Rutgers campus, the restaurant takes itself seriously, and does not have the usual cheesy array of school spirit items littered about, a relief for those who seek a short escape.
The portions are generous, but not overwhelming. What I usually get (on my meager budget) are either one of the delicious sandwiches in pita bread or a hummus appetizer. With unlimited free refills on drinks and toasted pita, Sahara Cafe is a great place to eat a hearty and healthy meal.
