2.977 American flags were "planted" on the glossy green lawn in front of Scott Hall on College Ave today. The tiny flags were arranged as if to represent a very tiny, very orderly cemetery. In a way, it was like a miniature cemetery, commemorating the fallen Americans from seven years ago. Upon my inquiry, it was revealed that Rutgers Republicans and the Centurion were responsible for this beautiful setup. As much as I often mock the conservative groups on campus for their sometimes spoofy qualities, I really admire their sincerity and patriotism. This 9/11 memorial reminds students of what took place seven years ago, because it was a ordinary day just like this one, and it is so easy to forget that terrible tragedies can occur on any given day of the most ordinary nature.
It would have been nice if this memorial was the joint effort of the liberal student groups on campus as well, because if 9/11 should represent anything, it should remind Americans that no matter how fiercely the parties fight, we're still one united nation.
