Schiano's Secret

It is revealed in the Star Ledger that life for coach Greg Schiano of the Rutgers football team is even sweeter than we had previously thought.

In this article, we find out that a secret addendum releases him from the obligation of paying $500,000 in the event of an early leave from his contract as compensation for projected delays in the stadium construction. This, on top of the $1.6 million the man makes per year makes him the most beloved member of the Rutgers faculty if love is measured by the size of his paycheck.

I don't know about the other 8,000,000+ members of the New Jersey populace, but I'm feeling a little indignant about the "secret" aspect of this addendum. As someone who contributes to his hefty salary, and who is more than a little disgruntled at the budget cuts threatening the school's academic programs, I think it's a minimal act of respect and courtesy for the school to be completely honest with how much money goes to the coach.

So what I'm trying to say is, the football team better win every god damn game this year.

No pressure or anything.

Believe it or not, Coach Schiano is underpaid and is doing a great job. Other teams that offer to double and triple his salary prove that. You must know that he was paid peanuts for 6 years while he systematically improved the quality of the team and its facilities. And it's difficult to argue the team has been playing and recruiting the best it ever has. While I'm not pleased that part of his contract was hidden from the public, I'd be much more unhappy if Coach Schiano left.

@ Anonymous: Other schools might have more money to give, but Rutgers is definitely struggling financially, so I wouldn't say Schiano is underpaid. I don't really care how much other coaches are making, but when someone makes millions, there's no such thing as being underpaid.
