Superman Gets Dark (No, Not by Getting More Sun)

Angsty, tortured superheroes appear to have more depth. The more directions they're pulled in by their responsibilities and desires, the better. The recent Spiderman and Batman flicks are prime examples of good looking men in pain (and in tights) that make big bucks in the box office. Compared to these guys, the last Superman movie fared less than fabulously due to his lack of anguish (relatively speaking)...but all this is about to change, even if the directors aren't exactly sure of how to do it.

How do you make the fastest, strongest man of steel darker, anyway? Can we Bogart him into a bitter, cynical chain-smoker? Or have his parents brutally murdered by thugs in, um, Kansas? Or have his one true love die from a bullet that rebounded off of his eyeball? So many possibilities, but also the heavy responsibility of outdoing the Dark Knight, which is a tall order of near impossibility. We'll just have to see how the next Superman movie plays out, if there ever will be another.
