The aroma of hops and yeast seems to forever linger the halls at UC Davis. Sure, some students may come to class with a hang over but now they can leave class feeling that familiar sense of dizziness. UC Davis professor is giving lessons that his students might actually use sooner than later – making their own beer!
Professor Charles Bamforth has recently joined the Viticulture and Enology and Food Sciences Departments as their go-to guy for beer. Bamforth was a beer enthusiast from a young age and started his career at the Brewing Research Foundation and later went on to work at the Bass Brewing Company and his current employer, Anhueser-Busch. Bamforth teaches a class called “Malting and Brewing.” After the course’s previous instructor retired, there were speculations that the class would eventually be dropped until Anhueser-Busch heard of the position opening and pushed one of their own into the class.
Proving his abilities as a beer connoisseur, Bamforth has written several books on his most beloved drink of choice; some titles include Grape v. Grain and Beer: Tap Into the Art and Science if Brewing.
Bamforth’s class roster is made up of Viticulture and Enology majors, Food Science majors and even Chemical Engineering majors all there to learn the trade of keeping traditional beer-making alive. His passion for the fermented beverage even has his students laughing at his daily health tips which highlight the importance of beer in one's diet.
