Patching Up the Ozone Layer is Useless

A new study out of Columbia University has concluded that repairing the “hole” in the ozone layer would do more harm than good. Apparently, doing so would change the direction of the winds, resulting in “catastrophic effects.” After 50 years, when the ozone “hole” recovers, the same effects will take place.

Wait a second! The ozone layer can recover? If that’s true, why is global warming such a big problem? Why are we making such an effort to go “green” if the Earth can take care of itself?

On the other hand, how would they repair the ozone layer anyway? Pollution and household items such as hairspray have been depleting the ozone layer since the 1990s. It’s been almost 20 years of damage, yet there has been no sign of recovery or repairs.

The truth is that we are all in trouble. Because of the ozone layer’s weakened ability to screen out the harmful rays of the sun, the entire food chain is suffering. The steady melting of the polar ice caps is causing the fish to die and the artic animals to go hungry and homeless. Skin cancer is now one of the leading causes of death. We assume that this global matter doesn’t affect us individually but it’s that kind of thinking that got us into this mess.

To protect yourself this summer, make sure you wear sunscreen. Even so, it is important to limit your exposure to the sun. Your tan might look good now but you could end up paying for it with your life.
