The Women in Film (WIF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to highlighting women's achievements in the entertainment industry, celebrated the amazing accomplishments of women at the Oscars, while Dr. Martha M. Lauzen, an SDSU theatre professor, played "Debbie Downer" with her research concerning the representation of women in the entertainment world.
"The Celluloid Ceiling," a survey conducted by Lauzen, found not only that women are barely present in the areas of directing, producing, writing and cinematography, but also that the percentage of them in these areas is declining incrementally each year.
Why does this matter?
Well, it all boils down to perspective. Since the entertainment industry is controlled by males, entertainment is saturated with male culture and media. Organizations, like WIF, want to level the playing field. Women want to feel comfortable in the entertainment world, and we don't need moments like Katherine Heigl pulling the "sexist card" for the movie Knocked Up.
There's only one thing left to do: infiltrate Hollywood.
