Last week as I was browsing Jezebel, I came across something truly disturbing. It was a post about an article that appeared in the University of Connecticut's publication, the Daily Campus. Since there isn't anyone currently representing UConn, I thought I'd voice my opinion.
To briefly summarize, Melissa Bruen, a senior and the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Campus, wrote a first person essay that appeared on the front page, describing a sexual assault she suffered during spring weekend in late April.
Basically, she was walking back to campus from a party on a path affectionately dubbed the "rape trail" by students. While she stopped to make a phone call, she was approached by a man and "dry humped" against a pole. She fought back, pinning him to the ground and punching her assailant in the face. A group of guys, who witnessed the entire thing, pulled her off, and the man took off.
"He just assaulted me," Bruen yelled out, understandably justifying her actions. One man from the crowd stepped forward and aggressively said, "You think that was assault?" He then pulled down her tube top and grabbed her breasts, while the other men cheered.
Now, while this whole encounter is inexcusable, I couldn't help but be absolutely outraged by some of the comments I read on the Daily Campus website. One guy, who calls himself "Pete" started off by saying, "Oh wow, you're sooooo brave. Please." He then goes on to refer to the assault as "minor shenanigans."
Here's the real clincher:
"When it comes to 'rape,' the vast majority of the time the only injustices are felt by men, not girls. I'm sick of supposed to be feeling sorry for girls (and yes, I say girls just to annoy the feminists.) This editor will probably have her future paved in gold by newspapers who will only hire her because she's female while far more qualified male reporters/editors, etc. get the shaft...Who's getting raped there?"
Honestly, I don't even know where to start. But wow, congrats Petey, you managed to make me vomit in my mouth upon reading your wonderful wisdom. Thanks for enlightening me. It just blows my mind how people could be so ignorant, so insensitive, and claim to be educated human beings.
Boys need to take responsibility for their actions (and yes, I say boys just because I can). So stop blaming women for your shortcomings. Obviously, I'm not talking to all men, just the chauvinist scumbags like my friend Pete here.
