I compiled a list of "haunted" places on Long Island. To my surprise, there were actually a lot to choose from. They're in no particular order, and you can find out the story behind each by going to http://liparanormalinvestigators.com/hauntedLI.shtml Yes, there is actually a team of "ghost hunters" right here on Long Island
10. Lake Ronkonkoma
Some say its bottomless. Another legend (Very Romeo & Juliet) say there is a disgruntled ghost of a Native American girl whose lover (from a feuding tribe) was murdered. Apparently, she drowned herself and returns to haunt the lake.
9. Commack Multiplex Cinemas
Just your basic opening and closing of lockers, unexplained noises, etc.
8. Country House Restaurant
This restaurant, converted from an old house, is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a British girl who was hanged during the Revolutionary War.
7. Sweet Hollow Road/Mount Misery
This is one of my personal favorites. I, like many curious kids on L.I, have visited this notorious road in Huntington many times. There are a few legends behind this one. One says, if you park your car under the Northern State Parkway overpass, turn off your lights, and put it in neutral, the car will move uphill. Also, a lady in white is said to be seen crossing the street by the graveyard. My roommate swears by this. I, myself, have never experienced any such sighting. Some more outrageous claims include a cop who pulls people over on the road, but when he turns around, the back of his head is missing. Another describes a dog with red eyes, and if you see him, you are going to die.
6. Hanging Tree
I also visited this spot recently. The legend behind this tree in south Patchouge says that it was used to hang people during the Salem witch age. My roommate and I went one night and heard some unexplainable footsteps/noises. Maybe it was just paranoia. It was dark, and we were alone, after all. It was actually terrifying.
5.Amityville "Horror" House
Though infamous, and pretty much everybody has heard the story behind this, I don't really think it's legitimately haunted. Just an exploited tragedy and a bad movie.
4.King's Park Asylum
A right of passage among Long Island kiddies, exploring the grounds of this abandoned asylum is as creepy as one could hope for. Though cops patrol the area, and it's illegal to be on the premises. So, if you choose to visit this area, be discreet.
3. Fire Island Lighthouse
Supposedly, a care taker killed himself like a 100 years ago and haunts the lighthouse.
2. Reid's Ice Cream Factory
This was knocked down, but there are two stories behind this. The first, a ghost of a murdered woman from the 1920s, another of a little boy who wandered in there in the 40s and died.
1. Katie's of Smithtown
Just a bar in Smithtown where strange things happen. Apparently glasses break, and a ghost name Charlie frequents the grounds. You know, just your average bar.
