This is not a joke, though you might just assume it is by the mind-numbingly hokey trailer before you. Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola, American Express and American Airlines present “Proud American,” a film about “the nation's spectacular landmarks and engineering marvels, historical sites and natural wonders, Proud American is really about the American people. The film will portray America as a land of opportunity, and tolerance. First seen through the eyes of new American citizens we hear why they came, how they came and what they appreciate most. Things many of us take for granted. Drama, spectacle, and humor are woven into a fast paced film, which delivers chills, actions, tears and warmth. Unlike any film ever made about America, it comes at a time when America needs it most. Uplifting, Powerful, Amazing, True.”
The intent of this film is to boost the moral of the American people, but what it appears like is a way for corporations to manipulate and control an image for this country. Just by watching the trailer, I can’t help but cringe at the desperateness of it all. There were surely other ways to make a film like this, that didn’t involve pounding dramatically overdone, and unrealistic stereotypes into our heads.
In case you were wondering, yes; that was indeed Ruthie Camden and Mr. Belding in the trailer. Though, I’m not sure if that’s enough to draw in an audience, being that the film has been playing since late September and has only grossed an average of $118 per theater. “Proud American” is even playing in IMAX! This concerns me, however. I wonder if this is the future of film, Wal-Mart style.
