Wal-Mart Worker Trampled to Death on Black Friday

Wal-Mart Worker Trampled to Death on Black Friday

When I think of Black Friday, I imagine throngs of Virginians scaling the outer walls of Wal-Mart, the weekly circular clutched in their sweaty palms. It’s five a.m., and overly confident and overfed ladies (not unlike those Thanksgiving Turkeys lain out on their tables the night before) are kicking up dust on the sidewalk with their hooves, mentally prepping their route to the latest Elmo toy. Though, this image is what has kept me out of the south on this day, and Wal-Mart on any day, I am ashamed to say that this scenario is closer to home than one would speculate.

They say it’s darkest just before dawn, and this morning, outside of the Wal-mart in Valley Stream, this couldn’t be more accurate. Yes, Long Island, not Virginia or even Binghamton for that matter. Long Island—a place where we pride ourselves in being a civilized and sophisticated people. Though, at 5 a.m. this morning, a 34-year-old Wal-mart employee was trampled to death by a stampede of hundreds of Long Islanders. Not only did the crowd ignore his body beneath his feet, but customers continued to enter the store as the man was being worked on, though he was clearly dead. A few others were injured, including a pregnant woman who was taken to the hospital for observations.

So, I suppose this is a lesson to us, that this kind of Black Friday myth isn't exclusive to the boondocks of West Virginia, but also right here in the Metropolitan area.  I guess we can't judge anymore.

The quickest way to disperse a walmart mob is to yell "He's got a gun!"
It could have saved the employee's life.

Wow. This posting reeks with arrogance and classism. I thought snobs like you were a myth or perhaps a literary device employed by mystery writers to provide motive or to make the murderer sympathetic. Posted 11/29/2008 12:31 PMReply

I hate to break it to you pal, but classism is just a fancy word for telling it like it is. Posted 11/29/2008 1:22 PMReply

I don't believe this is classist. I'm simply pointing out the irony that an actual Black Friday death occurred on a Wal*Mart on Long Island (When up until a few years ago there weren't really any Wal*Marts in the area) Whether you think it's politically correct or not, Wal*Mart is often associated with rural areas (If you've ever seen the movie Where The Heart is or any reference to Wal*Mart.) I often write about Long Island, even though I'm constantly hearing the same old stereotypical insults about it and the people who live there; and honestly, they are mostly true, in fact, they are simple observations. I'm sorry if my sarcastic voice offends you, but I use it in all of my posts. Yes it's a touchy subject, but honestly, I don't really think its offensive to Wal*Mart or an entire state for that matter. Posted 11/29/2008 3:32 PMReply

It's a simple fact that LI is a very wealthy area, while Wal Mart caters to a more low-budget audience. Their trademark is low prices, this posts makes total sense. Have a sense of humor...jeez. Posted 11/29/2008 3:37 PMReply

Perhaps you're right. I am overly sensitive (And a bit envious.) It pushes my buttons when I think the children of privilege consider themselves inherently superior instead of blessed by good fortune.

And it doesn't help to know that my family is still competing for scraps in WV. Someone I love might one day be the innocent victim of this kind of madness -- while the wealthy ridicule them from the comfort of Long Island.

But as you pointed out in your post: though you pride yourselves on being "sophisticated," you can't judge anymore. Posted 11/29/2008 4:16 PMReply
