Whatever Happened to Open Bar?

Two years ago, the mark of a good weekend at Binghamton was attending the various “open bar” events down on State Street. This past year, there have been none. What the hell happened? Binghamton’s undergrads now have to pay for their own drinks, instead of an unlimited amount of alcohol for only five dollars? Mutiny! Apparently, a new city ordinance has issued a ban on “open bars” sponsored by fraternities or sororities. Now maybe it isn’t so fabulous that undergrads can drink their guts out (literally) for a small charge in a part of town not exactly known for safety, but come on, it’s college! It also seems that the moratorium on open bars has helped cause the closing of one of Binghamton’s landmark student bars, the Sports Bar. So bring open bar back! We’re only in college for four (or five or six) years, and it should be the best damn time of our lives that we don’t remember.
