A Greener Move-Out Day

A Greener Move-Out Day
Move-out week is traditionally a mad dash to the dumpster with the bean bag chairs, broken milk crates and old class notebooks -- resulting in hundreds of thousands of pounds of garbage, much of it reuseable. Now some campuses are making efforts to make the move-out process a little more eco-friendly.

If you've ever walked through the dorms after the frenzy has calmed, you know what I'm talking about: halls lined with discarded clothes and electronics, mini-fridges and textbooks, even canned food. And that's just the stuff that hasn't already ended up in the dumpster.

Luckily, dozens of schools are hopping on the green bandwagon. These are just a few of the efforts being led around the country to reduce the dorm move-out impact:
  • George Washington University's Green Move-Out runs through May 21. Donation boxes are provided in Somers Hall and in the lobby of Ivory Tower.
  • UC Berkeley's End of Semester "Reuse" Move Out Program will run May 24, 25 and 31 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Cal Student Move-out center. Bring all your reusable items.
  • This Saturday marks NYU's first "Green Apple Move Out" collection drive. Gently used items and non-perishable foods can be donated at locations on campus from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. The items will then be donated to local non-profits. They estimate this will keep up to 25,000 pounds of garbage out of landfills.
Then again, the greenest thing you could do would be not just donating your old cast-offs, but fishing for some new ones, too. And trust me, there are more than enough treasures to go around. Best spots to look: those freshman dorms and the dumpsters and curbsides on frat and sorority row.
