According to fire officials, no students were seriously injured.Several fire, police, and EMT trucks responded as well as Syracuse University Ambulances. Euclid was shut down from approximately Lancaster to Maryland avenue (one block).
The fire occurred in the primarily-Syracuse University-student occupied southeast university neighborhood area. Paula Howell, the owner of the house said that none inside were severely injured, but did suffer from smoke inhalation. Howell has been renting the house to SU students for three years.
A fire official on the scene confirmed that no tenants were seriously injured but could not confirm the rumor that one student had to jump from the second story. The official did confirm that a student did need to be rescued via the fire ladder. At the time of the incident a cause was not determined.
This is the largest fire in the University area while school was still in session. Last fall, however, a laundromat slightly farther from campus caught on fire, and this past summer another student-occupied house on Redfield burned as well. | © AJ CHAVAR 2008
