Old flames Platform Holly and Jim Morrison, with poorly-drawn heart
Allegedly something cool occurred in Isla Vista (forty years ago). The I.V. Wikipedia entry states that Jim Morrison came here in 1967, got high on acid, and wrote the song “Crystal Ship” while watching the bright lights on the Platform Holly oil rig.
This would be incredibly cool if it actually happened, but the Wiki on “Crystal Ship” claims that Morrison borrowed the song’s imagery from Celtic legend, with no mention of I.V. anywhere. Curse you and your contradictions, Wikipedia!
The actual lyrics of “Crystal Ship” don’t seem to reference either Celtic folklore or I.V. In fact, it’s pretty damn difficult to tell what the song is about at all, but it’s a rock song from the '60s, so it’s probably either a metaphor for drugs or a break-up. These interpretations don’t rule out the I.V. legend, as it’s possible that the acid-tripping musician somehow fell in love with and felt spurned by Platform Holly. (Platform Holly would not respond to questions about the nature of her relationship with Mr. Morrison, due to the fact that she is an oil rig.)
Perhaps we’ll never know the truth, but I prefer the I.V. version. Come on, Celtic Legend, stop being so greedy. You already have leprechauns and banshees. Give Morrison to us Isla Vistans!
