On October 7th, Bowman and Taylor took part in the beating of a Philadelphia man at a party in the campus student center. The two football players were let off the hook with a little more than a slap on the wrist – one year probation, 100 hours of community service and a $750 fine.
The fact that these two meatheads received such a light punishment is a little disconcerting. Why are sports stars -- especially football players -- always treated more favorably than average joes? In all honesty, I don’t really care about the fight itself. I mean -- if you’re stupid enough to put yourself in a situation where football players want to fight you, then you probably have it coming.
The part that really chaps my ass, though, is how stupid these jocks are allowed to be time-and-time again. Think about it: these guys are given the opportunity of a lifetime – an all expense ticket to one of the top colleges in the nation -- and they continuously blow it. They let their little brains be dictated by their juiced up muscles, and they fight for stupid reasons in front of countless people with surveillance cameras watching them. Seriously, how stupid can you be?
Perhaps I should stop talking though… before I get into a fight of my own.

Take the Austin Scott rape case. This was one of many that led to the media overhyping Penn State's "off the field issues". Yet the charges were dropped and now you have a young man whose name will forever be dirt in the college football world. His defense attorney said they were also looking at filing charges against the Centre Country prosecutor. Look and see how many news outlets have reported on the charges being dropped.
You also talke about the countless witnesses and surveillance cameras. This is all true, but why weren't any other people connected to the fight? Because the victim was shown a yearbook of the football team, which of course is unfair and wouldn't make a difference if the other perpetrators weren't on the team. What they saw through the footage was large, intimidating Black men, and assumed that they must be apart of the "rowdy" football crew.
I'm not saying what they did was right, but let it be known that Penn State has not become the next "Thug U" and certain people in certain positions will do anything to target athletes in cases that may advance their careers. Posted 06/02/2008 10:36 AMReply
But the bottom line is, the reason they got nothing more than a "slap on the wrist" is because prosecutors couldn't find anyone to testify and cameras in the HUB (where the fight took place) couldn't indentify the attackers.
So, thanks for really checking into things JWCuse. Posted 06/02/2008 11:11 AMReply
