The 29th annual General Motors car show was held in the Union Station Great Hall last Thursday, and the fashion design students of the International Academy of Design and Technology came out to showcase their work for GM's competition.
The Imagine IADT annual event is the only at the academy to harmonize all the departments, as it also shows interior design (set), merchandise managment (production assistant), multi-media production and design (video production), advertising and design (collateral material), and Information Technology (data collection). The pieces are to be influenced by the chosen vehicle's, "form, shape, technology, materials, color, stance, character features, and challenged by special garment categories such as career, sportswear, evening wear, and avant garde," according to GM's website.
The show reminded me of an episode of Project Runway, allowing art to seamlessly transfer into fashion, allowing each student to question the function and style of both motor vehicles and clothing. The most successful design, in my eyes, would be the dress inspired by the Saab Turbo X as it unionizes the wicked sexuality, starkness (in black & white), and technology (the bias-cut of the silk, the 280 horsepower V-6) of both the garment and the vehicle.
The five designs, along with photos of additional designs shown at the event, are available for viewing at the companies website, media.gm.com.
