Green Street Arts Center in Middletown

The newly established Green Street Arts Center in Middletown's North End neighborhood began as a community project of Wesleyan University and has taken on a life of its own in the rapidly changing area. Many Wesleyan students volunteer and have work-study positions at Green Street. It's a becomi

Jimmy D's Antiques, on the way out of town on Route 66, is by far the most bizarre bazaar in Middletown. Tons of strange stuff is stored inside the house, on the front porch, in the front lawn, and in the back yard. It's a vast clearinghouse of America's kitsch of the ages. It's also been one of my

Vic Wants You (To Vote Green)
Vic Note the "No Soliciting" sign Outside Klekolo World Coffee (at Court and Main Streets) Photo from http://showcasewebsites.com/localpage.html

Middletown's lovable (and incorrigible) old Green Party promoter Vic wants you to vote. And vote Green. And challenge the two-party system. And understand the corruption of both the Democratic and Republican parties, to name a few things. He hangs out at Klekolo's coffee shop (near the intersection of Court

Summer in Middletown. Not the Hottest Place to be, but the Mannequins Are Positively Melting
It's just the Post Office (but it makes for a pretty picture) Tina's FINE Lingerie Walgreens. The place to be. Free refills. 20 oz. Ice. Sugar. Caffeine. Italian Society (at Main and Washington) Go kick it with the locals at the Coin Show. Or other like events. Never Say Goodbye. Resale shop down Washington, near A&P Go to Praline's on a hot day and order the neon icecream with a cherry on top Leave town
You're a Wesleyan student. You're stuck working in Middletown for the summer, perhaps by choice, perhaps because there's nothing better to do. This will probably one of my flimsiest, but most heartfelt posts this summer, so take it to heart kids... MORE »
Orange Skies Over the Village of Wesleiana

The sky was inexplicably and marvelously orange in the Middletown/Wesleyan area during a storm this week. The entire town appeared to be awash in the glow, overwhelmed by a sky of melted orange sherbet. (Middletown, CT)

My hypothesis: The water molecules lingering in the humid air reflected the light from the sunset on their numerous, microscopic facets, producing a sky overcast in orange.

Tunneling Under Middletown | Views of the Connecticut River
Enter the... river... Tunneling Under Middletown | Views of the Connecticut River Tunneling Under Middletown | Views of the Connecticut River Tunneling Under Middletown | Views of the Connecticut River Tunneling Under Middletown | Views of the Connecticut River
The tunnel under Route 9 leads to a sidewalk running along the Connecticut River. The tunnel used to be filled with graffiti, but has been whitewashed recently. Its architecture retains its strange, but welcome effect on the senses... (Route 9 Tunnel, Middletown, CT)

If you're looking for a nice walk around town this summer, head down to the tunnel that periscopes the river. Wesleyan's rowing team uses this area for practice, so you may catch a glimpse of shining muscle if you go at the right time of the year.
Middletown Abandoned | The Spookiest Spot Off-Campus
Parts of the painted ceiling of the building remain. A fallen chandlier hangs among dusty desks. Parsing the rubble's exhausted code. Beneath the rust, the beach? A "Phantom of the Opera" seance, anyone? Play us a song. The grandeur of a bygone age... Piano interior. Piano exterior. Clouded glasses.
The Opera House sits in ruins and exudes only dust as several students wander through its architectural corpse. (Crumbling Opera House/Theater, Middle-of-nowhere-town, USA)

No phantoms hanging around this haunt but there are many decaying pianos. The vast space provokes thought as well as some coughing. Probably lead dust. Despite its toxicity this curious dumping ground of defunct bicycles and beer cans inspires exploration
Latest comment by JeanDesiree: I didn't want to give away too much, so I left the specific location out of my post. You'll have to go exploring and asking around yourself to find it. If it weren't sensitive information, I'd surely let you know. Contact me by a personal email if you'd like the location. jeanpockrus@gmail.com
