Jumbo Jamz: Mt. Desert Island

Friends, Romans, Tuftonians -- lend me your ears and hearken unto Jumbo Jamz - Volume 1. In what will hopefully be a new installment, my fellow bloggers and I will attempt to bring you the latest and greatest beats, jams, and licks from campus bands. There is so much more to Tufts-made music than Guster; read on and get ready to turn it up to eleven.

Today's focus is Mt. Desert Island, a two-piece indie rock act consisting of rising juniors Jesse Kohn (A '10) and Bennett Kuhn (A' 10). The duo creates lyrically beautiful and musically compelling songs. Kuhn's ethereal beats and Kohn's often wistful lyrics evoke a sort of otherworldly nineteenth century Paris or a long train ride across vast Russian plains with nothing more than a journal in hand and memories in tow. One of their tracks, "The Waltz," is a tale of love lost, in which the pair blaze a trail through the intricate architectures of memory with a minimalist electronic backdrop and swelling synth lines. It's been playing on repeat for the past thirty minutes.

Though their MySpace only features two tracks, the band has a decent repertoire and is working on recording their debut EP. Their live show, which I have been privileged to see on a few occasions, is not to be missed, especially when joined onstage by other Tuftonian musicians Renato Montenegro (E '08) and Debbie Neigher (A '09). To catch one-half of Mt. Desert Island in action, Jesse will be performing at La Luna Cafe, Saturday, July 5, 9 PM with Adrien ft. the Little Darlings.
