This just in: former NC senator and friend of Bono Jesse Helms has died at the age of 86.  Known for his ultra-conservative policies and his influence in Washington over 30 years, he was often called a "polarizing figure" but few can deny his political success.

Whether you're a life-long supporter or you hated the man's guts, I think we can all agree that 86 is a ripe old age and, if higher justice exists, he's probably reaping whatever he sowed (and you can spin that any way you want, Mr. DJ).

The cause of his death is unknown at this time.
