Ripe Produce: Must Read Tufts Stories

Ripe Produce: Must Read Tufts Stories

We know you’re all out of school, but we’re going to attempt to keep you abreast on Tufts news this summer with a new feature. Similar to Fresh Cream, Ripe Produce will feature local Tufts news that’s “ripe for the reading.” Here are five summer stories you must know.

* Shocking! A study from Tufts Medical Center says jolts of electricity might help obese people lose weight.

* He’s more than just a mascot, dammit! Jumbo, the loveable elephant, has been ranked the most unique in college sports. He’s also the only mascot that can be found in the Webster’s Dictionary.

* Newsweek just can’t enough of the kids in Medford, Mass. The mag says Tufts is the hottest school for studying abroad.

* Forget the rally for cancer! The Jumbo Janitor Alliance is fighting to raise awareness for the custodial staff through student-led protests and petitions.

* This gentleman plans to blog about the pros and cons of going to Tufts Dental School.

I hear all this study-abroad stuff, but the Tufts Abroad page says the Tufts-In-China program is a semester only. The Japanese abroad folks get a whole year, why don't we? Or am I misinformed? Posted 06/12/2008 2:41 PMReply

The Jumbo Janitor Alliance campaign is such a joke. Janitors making $14.10 an hour in an unskilled position are in no place to be making demands. If your job is tough, get schooling and get a better job. This is unbelievable that we Tufts kids consistently try to emulate some shining liberal model of selflessness that is really not practical. We're supposed to feel bad for the janitors and their situation while we privileged students come down and help them. The senior who's leading the campaign is a bit too naive for my taste. But then again so is every other pseudo-intellectual Marxist worshiping save the world type at tufts Posted 06/12/2008 9:40 PMReply

@ Anonymous: You're misinformed, I believe. There is no Tufts-in-Japan program. If you want to go to Japan, you can do a different program, some of which might be a year, and some of which might be a semester. Posted 06/13/2008 06:28 AMReply

@ The Merry Widow: @ Anonymous: You are both misinformed. There is a Tufts-in-Japan program, which offers a year-long option only. They axed the spring semester option earlier this year for some reason.

As for the Tufts-in-China program, it seems like it's only one semester, but that's why you can look for a non-Tufts option. That being said, Japan > China.

"Japan > China."

Don't make me come over there and take away all the characters you 'borrowed' (people now belong to the nation they support, look it up). I swear to god I'll do it.

For shame, Peasant. I thought you were the cool kid of the group. Weeeeeaboooooo

@ Anonymous: Weeaboo? You bite your tongue, sir/madam!

Ahem, the Sino-Japanese War. Google it.

While I recognize Japan's deep cultural debt to China, I am somewhat obligated to select Japan over China due to my studies. You are absolutely right about me beeing the cool kid of the group; modest, too.
