UC Berkeley is hosting the 2008 Special Olympics Summer Games of Northern California this weekend. Opening ceremonies were held Friday night and events started Saturday. Sunday will see track and field, volleyball, aquatics, tennis, and bocce occurring at various locations around campus. Closing ceremonies will be Sunday night.
This would explain the groups of "special kids" I've seen wandering around south Berkeley this weekend (usually with very attentive supervision). Last year we had the Irish; this year we have..
I'm going to wrap up this post before I say anything too insensitive. Good luck to the participants, and thanks Cal for being cool enough to drown out the sheer offensiveness of your numerous frat brothers (and me).
