Berkeley Professor Speaking to Mormons Sounds Funny, But Is Probably Still Boring
Apparently they're trying to modernize.

According to the Deseret Morning News (which, for the record, scares the lucky underwear out of me), UC Berkeley Professor Ann Swidler will be at the Church of Latter Day Saints' Brigham Young University Thursday presenting a lecture dubbed "Fighting for the American Family: Families in the Crosshairs of the Culture Wars."

Michael Joseph Gross--of Amazon.com fame--says her book Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life is "required reading for anyone who wants to understand how religion contributes to and detracts from America's common good." Forgive me if I'm wrong, but don't people at BYU think religion is America's common good? So isn't this lecture kind of like preaching to the deaf?

Whatever. If she's anything like the other professors at Berkeley, those Mormons will be asleep in seconds.
