Sad news: everyone's favorite Econ professor, Jay Shimshack, announced yesterday that he will be leaving Tufts for Tulane this fall. Shimshack has a well-deserved rep as a fantastic teacher who manages to actually make statistics ... well, if not enjoyable, at least bearable, and environmental econ downright fun. (He won the UNITE award in 2007, which rewards "excellence in teaching and advising, concern for students' academic and personal growth, and the ability to convey a passion and enthusiasm for their field of study.") We'll be sad to see you go, Professor Shimshack, but best of luck at Tulane!Comments

More importantly, Gary McKissick announced to his CH 2 class that he's not coming back in the fall. The way he said it (he's apparently been fighting for his job all semester??) it seems Tufts is pushing him out.
All I can say is what the ****, Tufts, what the ****?~!

ugh, losing shimshack is a downright shame. the guy's a gem of an econ teacher - it's amazing to have one with such enthusiasm. a big loss for all.

Regarding McKissick, I heard he wasn't offered tenure a year or so ago and that might be why. Just a rumor though.

Tufts hasn't been offering tenure to an alarmingly large percentage of its professors over the last 10-20 years, and has often an even smaller percentage of its minority professors tenure. How can you expect to keep any good professors if you refuse to grant them tenure?

There was an article about McKissick in the Observer, where he basically said that he knew he wouldn't get tenure in PoliSci, so he switched to Community Health completely, where he's been for a while. No idea what happened this time.
Very sad to see Shimshack go. I think he's the highest ratest econ professor at Tufts, at least in terms of teaching.

I'm not sad at all to see Shimshack go. He hates being in statistics more than most students do. One class he finished by saying "That's all, that was torture."

Thats because statistics is hell not a reflection of his character. Tufts is losing its best professor at tufts and the only econ department prof to actually give a rip and who can actually relate to students. And after losing Schloss of History of Rock and Roll...Im glad im leaving this place all the good teachers are gone now

This is just FINE by me. He was a self-important douche. Also fvck Gary McKissick, he was just as bad as Shimshack but in a different way. AND he couldn't teach. Good riddance!
