We Don't Just Report The News ...
Our own Peasant and Philosopher were interviewed for the article, and both stress (and I'll stress again) the difference between OTR and sites like JuicyCampus. I won't deny that our jokes get a tad mean sometimes, but the goal of any jab is always humor, not degradation. But enough serious talk — the big question remaining is: when will the Daily write an article covering the dangers of machetes?

Uh, aren't half the OTR staff also at the Daily? I don't know any of you personally, but it seems pretty obvious that at least some of you are double-hatted. Posted 04/17/2008 11:09 AMReply

So, this is just a not-so-subtle way to use the subverted Daily to advertise OTR? Who'd have thunk it?!?

Well, I'm sure glad the Daily staff has time to write about minor fun stuff while the tensions between Dean Sternberg and many faculty remain under the rug. And whatever happened to the Tufts references in the book The Price of Admission that some of you should have picked up on by now <clue, clue>? Who knows, it might contain evidence that makes a Tufts faculty member look like a complete shit.

The Merry Widow
@ Anonymous: The rise of college blogs is something that's happening across the country, and worth covering. Maybe read the article — it's not just an advertisement (esp. considering it goes into the darker side of blogs, and interviews people who dislike OTR.) But thanks for the tip; if I spot the book I'll check it out. Posted 04/17/2008 11:41 AMReply

It's a good article. My only concern is the lack of disclosure. Usually, journalistic ethics make it necessary that when a staff member works for the subject of an article, there should be disclosure. It's a conflict of interest matter. Even if it's just "Several Daily staff also blog on Tufts OTR. They did not contribute to this article" Posted 04/17/2008 12:40 PMReply

@ Anonymous: Yes, exactly half. Good guess. Posted 04/17/2008 2:29 PMReply

"Yes, exactly half. Good guess."

All this and you've only got sarcasm for a tiny little point? How about refuting my point and setting me straight? Explain how this isn't a conflict of interest issue and I'll easily change my mind. It's not like I care THAT much.

@ Anonymous: On the lack of disclosure: However, keep in mind that the Daily has to cover a large number of campus groups which may have members of the Daily participating - with a 90-person masthead alone (yes, I counted the masthead names, don't look at me like that! ;-) ), it would be a very difficult precedent to set. If OTR&Daily people had contributed, it's conflict of interest for sure - but the listed contributers don't appear to be members of both, so it's fine in the larger perspective of the other campus groups the Daily has to cover.

Since this site's been around all year, I'm surprised they didn't cover OTR earlier - that was my main clue that there wasn't any conflict of interest going on.
