Hollywood has a tendency to exploit some of history’s most devastating catastrophes. Not even ten years after the 9/11 tragedy, two movies were quickly produced and released leaving audiences shaking their heads, thinking “too soon, way too soon.”
Hollywood has done it again and the next catastrophe to be exploited is Hurricane Katrina. The producers of Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling For Columbine have recently gotten their hands on unseen footage of the disaster and are exploiting the pain and suffering of one family.
Trouble The Water is a documentary that features the Roberts family who was stranded at their 9th ward home left to suffer the brunt of the storm and then follows them back to their home after the storm. Although the filmmakers' efforts and intentions are good as they try to shed light on the torn lives of the victims, it seems more like they are trying to bank on their misfortune.
The documentary has already won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and it has received rave reviews but it still seems like this family is being wildly exploited.
"And Lessin and Deal know that the best documentaries reveal politics through personalities. In the gritty, buoyant Kim they found a person who symbolized both the lower depths of urban life and the resilience, when faced with an impossible challenge, to rise to a level higher than flood tide. Maybe Kim, Scott and their crew were no angels before Katrina, but that doesn't matter--because in Trouble the Water, we see the lives of the saints." – Time Magazine
