Berkeley Bands: Catch Them This Summer

Berkeley Bands: Catch Them This Summer
Okay, Mac Dre isn't from Berkeley, but we like to claim him anyway.

Berkeley and its fellow East Bay neighbors are well known for churning out some of the most unique musical acts, past and present. Here's a quick look at where you might be able to catch our signature sounds this summer:

AFI: Singer Davey and guitarist Jade were both Berkeley students. This summer, they will be primarily writing and recording the follow-up to their acclaimed album Decemberunderground, a hybrid of their hardcore past, synth rock, and 80's post-punk. The band has not committed to any tours as of yet, but stay hopeful.

Green Day: Perhaps Berkeley's most famous band, ever, and reaching its 21st year. Although they've spent the past three years milking singles from American Idiot, the band has been laying low, instead playing in the garage-rock collective Foxboro Hot Tubs, on tour this month.

Keak Da Sneak: Our very own rabid rapper and creator of Hyphy will be releasing a new album in June.

Facing New York: This amazing progressive indie outfit, featuring a Berkeley music major, just gave one of their members away to Taking Back Sunday (ironically, of New York). They will be hitting the road in July as a three-piece. There are also rumors of a new album in the coming months.

Stanley P. Cox, better known as Mistah F.A.B. is seen all over Berkeley, performing in frats and droppin' bills at La Burrita. Well, he just dropped a new album last week, assuring us all he is still driving that yellow bus.

Judgement Day: After their violinist toured with Bright Eyes, this string-metal trio is back with an new EP and plans to play a string (no pun intended) of shows along the Pacific.

Rancid: The quintessential 90's punk band and legendary performers at Berkeley's Gilman venue will be touring throught the US and Canada.

All Shall Perish: This Oakland death-metal group will be tearing up the studios and taking part on the Sun Your Bunz tour.

Phallus in Chains, Cal's 90's tribute band, played a show in Blake's last week, but will be taking a break this summer.
