Berkeley Student Stabbed, Suspect Arrested
This is the sort of thing we all hate to see: a brilliant, young student, weeks away from graduation, losing his life in a senseless act of violence.

Chris Wootton, a 4th year engineering major, was stabbed during a fight that broke out between party attendees on Warring and Channing. The suspect was not a student.

This is a tragedy for what is usually a friendly environment. It is also a reminder that we must be vigilant for each other's sake. If a drunk dude wants to fight, for the love of God don't indulge him. If someone you don't know or isn't affiliated with any of your guests shows up at your party, it's only safe to make sure he or she leaves.

And obviously there are situations where it's not so easy; for such cases, you can call 510 642 3333 from your cell phone to reach UC police or 510 981 5911 for Berkeley City Police.

Do what you need to make sure you and your friends are safe. Sadly, Chris Wootton's death may have been a result of his attempts to follow this creed.

OTR wishes Chris' friends and family well. We hope a misfortune like this can be prevented in years to come.
