Can’t get into classes? Can’t even get on the waiting list? Well, it’s only going to get worse for students in the UC and Cal State systems. With the economy suffering and California’s deficit rising, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing taking even more money away from colleges and universities in the state.
The Daily Californian:
The plan calls for a $2.5 billion drop in funding for the Proposition 98 Guarantee, which ensures minimum funding for K-14 education and community colleges. It would also cut $65.5 million from the UC system and a similar amount from the California State University system.
Last month, the UC system took a $33 million cut- including a $5 million cut to UC Berkeley-after the governor released a fiscal order to state agencies to increase state savings.
Enough is enough. These cuts will decrease the number of classes offered and increase class sizes. I understand that California needs to shrink the deficit somehow, but I DO NOT think that school funding should be cut. The California university system attracts students from all over the world, but not for long. Enjoy all of your peers that are from different countries while you can, because soon no one will want to study in California (except maybe at Stanford or USC).
