Hasbro is supposed to be a company completely dedicated to fun – the sole purpose of the company is to put smiles on faces everywhere. Even the banner at the top of Hasbro's website reads Welcome To Hasbro Making The World Smile.
Turns out this fun-loving company has switched to fun-sucking. The wildly popular Facebook application and Scrabble spin-off, Scrabulous has been taken down the social networking site until further notice. Hasbro has gone on an infringement rampage and has filed an intellectual property suit against Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla, the creators of Scarbulous, who hail all the way from India.
Facebook users and Scrabulous addicts are in a twist about their sudden loss and hope that their beloved game will not vanish from the internet. It has been a common theme to make age-old family favorites into online/computer games. The coma-inducing card game Solitaire was turned into the ever-addicting Spider Solitaire and the Nintendo Gameboy original, Tetris can now be played free online.
Why Hasbro, the second biggest moneymaker in the toy industry, has decided to go after such a small reinvention is beyond me. Hopefully Hasbro remembers their own slogan when they start making Scrabulous users cry.
