Berkeley was one of the first towns to ban smoking in restaurants, and now it follows other California towns such as Calabasas, El Cajon, and Belmont in prohibiting smoking in commercial areas.

The law goes into effect in May. Police say they will not begin administering the $100 fine until several weeks in.
