Tau Epsilon Phi at University of Florida Goes on Interim Suspension for Hazing

On Monday night, the police were called to the Tau Epsilon Phi house on reports of possible hazing. Sure enough, when they got there, there were 36 pledges kneeling shirtless on the floor of the basement.

When Detective Jacob Pruitt arrived one of the members passed out. He was later taken to the hospital for reasons yet unknown. The pledges were wearing wet shoes and according to the report, one was shivering and complaining that he was cold.

The report also stated that "baby diapers, diapers with duct tape attached, broken glass bottles, alcohol bottles, trash and a trash can that was half full of water and ice” were at the scene. Whatever might have been going on there is left up to your imagination.

Sixteen pledges were questioned and eight provided pertinent details. They reported that they were made to sit on their knees for an hour and a half and some had food and water thrown at them. They also all concurred that the exercises were optional.

For now, TEP is under interim suspension until this whole mess gets sorted out. Pledges, here's a good life lesson: don't associate with people who will throw food at you.

Most of that information is ridiculous...the person that passed out was not a pledge, but a brother because he hyperventilated when all of the police came. There were no baby diapers and no one complained that they were cold. This is getting way too out of hand. Get a life and stop ruining all of these peoples lives who love and will always stand by TEP. Posted 11/07/2008 02:16 AMReply

Stand by TEP all you want, I'm just reporting what the police report said. I, personally, couldn't care less whether they are suspended or if they haze or not. Posted 11/07/2008 02:26 AMReply

All pledges also all concurred that the exercises were optional. If you stop your article there, you are still being a journalist.
Once you say "Pledges, here's a good life lesson: don't associate with people who will throw food at you" you are editorializing and putting your own comments into the article. I'm not going to go so far as to say FU, but you have a lot of power with your words and need to be more careful with how you use them. Report the facts, save your opinions for the editorial page.

Relax, it's called humor. If you want dry news, go read the Gainesville Sun.

I will say this, however, you are much better for TEP's image than "FU Anamo" guy who, in my opinion, makes TEP look worse than all the hazing reports. So thank you for having a coherent and valid argument.
